Cartridge Cleaning
Professional Cartridge Filter Cleaning
Restore cleaner filtration and help maintain proper system flow with professional pool and spa cartridge filter cleaning from Ultimate Pool Service.
Filter cartridges collect fine debris, oils, sunscreen, pollen, organic material and contaminants throughout the swimming season. Over time, these materials can become embedded within the filter media and may not be fully removed by simply rinsing the cartridge with a garden hose.
Our professional cleaning process combines inspection, rinsing, chemical soaking and thorough pressure cleaning to remove accumulated contaminants and help extend cartridge service life.
See the Difference Professional Cartridge Cleaning Makes
A cartridge can appear heavily stained and restricted after a season of filtering dirt, pollen, oils and other contaminants. A complete professional cleaning goes beyond a quick surface rinse.
Our process is designed to remove debris from the pleats while also breaking down contaminants that water alone may not effectively remove.
Properly maintained filter elements can help improve circulation, reduce unnecessary filter restriction and maintain more effective water filtration.

One set consists of all filter element(s) required to operate one filter. For example, a four-cartridge filter uses four elements, and those four elements together are considered one set. A spare set of elements is considered an additional set.
Exceptionally dirty cartridges may require a second chemical soaking treatment. If additional soaking is required, a $54.99 + HST charge applies.
Our Professional Cartridge Cleaning Process
Each cartridge set is handled through a multi-stage cleaning and inspection process.
Initial Inspection
We inspect the cartridge elements for damaged pleats, deteriorated bands, cracked end caps and other signs of wear.
Replacement Recommendation
If a cartridge appears too damaged or deteriorated to justify cleaning, we can advise you before proceeding.
Initial Rinse
Loose debris and surface contamination are removed before the chemical soaking stage.
Chemical Soak
The cartridges are soaked using Summer Smiles Klean Filter to help break down oils, sunscreen and accumulated contaminants.
Pressure Cleaning & Rinse
The filter pleats are thoroughly cleaned and rinsed to remove loosened debris and cleaning solution.
Final Inspection
The elements are reviewed again after cleaning so visible cartridge damage or deterioration can be identified.
Air Dry
Cleaned cartridges are set aside to dry before pickup or return.
Returned Unbagged
Cartridges are intentionally returned unpackaged and unbagged so residual moisture is not trapped around the filter media, helping reduce the risk of mould or mildew.
Why Professionally Clean Your Filter Cartridges?
Rinsing a cartridge with a garden hose is useful for routine maintenance, but water alone may not remove oils and contaminants that have become embedded in the filter media.
Professional cartridge cleaning combines chemical treatment with thorough rinsing to provide a deeper cleaning process.
- Removes dirt, pollen and embedded debris
- Helps remove oils, sunscreen and organic contamination
- Helps restore effective filtration performance
- Can improve system flow by reducing filter restriction
- Can help extend cartridge service life
- Provides an opportunity to identify worn or damaged cartridges
When Should Pool Filter Cartridges Be Cleaned?
Cartridge filters should be cleaned based on both seasonal maintenance and actual pool operating conditions. Waiting until a filter is severely restricted can reduce circulation and filtration performance.
We commonly recommend professional cartridge cleaning:
- At the end of the swimming season, after pool closing, before the cartridges are stored for winter.
- After algae or water-clarity treatment, when the filter has captured significant organic debris.
- After treatments for metals or phosphates, when removed contaminants may accumulate within the filter.
- After spring cleanup or periods of heavy pollen, when filters can load quickly with fine debris.
- When filter pressure remains elevated. A sustained increase in filter pressure compared with the system's normal clean operating pressure can indicate that the cartridges are becoming restricted and should be inspected and cleaned.
- When pool water remains unclear despite properly balanced chemistry, as restricted or heavily contaminated cartridges can reduce filtration effectiveness.
Pool & Spa Cartridge Filters of All Major Brands
Our cartridge cleaning service is available for residential pool and spa cartridge filters from all major manufacturers.
We clean both single-cartridge filters and multi-cartridge systems, including common four-element filter configurations.
If you are unsure whether your filter cartridges qualify for cleaning, contact our team before booking and we can help confirm the appropriate service.
When a Cartridge Should Be Replaced Instead of Cleaned
Professional cleaning can remove accumulated contamination, but it cannot repair physical deterioration or restore damaged filter media.
Replacement may be recommended when we identify issues such as:
- Torn or damaged pleats
- Broken or deteriorated support bands
- Cracked or damaged end caps
- Collapsed or permanently deformed filter media
- Significant deterioration due to age or chemical exposure
Cleaning cannot guarantee that an older or deteriorated cartridge will return to its original filtration performance. When replacement is the better option, we will advise you accordingly.
Cartridge Cleaning Turnaround Times
Turnaround varies throughout the year based on seasonal volume. Most cartridge sets are completed within a few business days to a few weeks.
During peak fall cleaning season, turnaround may be longer as large numbers of cartridges are received following pool closings.
Cartridges received before November will be ready no later than the second week of November.

Pool Cartridge Cleaning FAQs
How much does professional cartridge filter cleaning cost?
Deluxe Cartridge Cleaning is $189 per set plus HST and requires customer drop-off and pickup at our Oakville retail store. Ultimate Cartridge Cleaning is $249 per set plus HST and includes home pickup and return within most of our Oakville, Burlington and Mississauga service area.
What counts as one set of cartridges?
One set consists of all cartridge elements required to operate one filter. A four-cartridge filter therefore has one set consisting of four elements. A spare set of elements is considered a second set.
Do I need to book cartridge cleaning before dropping them off?
Booking in advance is preferred. It allows us to properly identify and track your cartridges and provide more accurate turnaround expectations.
How long does cartridge cleaning take?
Turnaround typically ranges from a few business days to a few weeks depending on seasonal volume. Cartridges received before November will be ready no later than the second week of November.
Do you clean four-cartridge filters?
Yes. We clean single-cartridge and multi-cartridge residential pool and spa filters, including common four-cartridge systems.
Do you clean all brands of pool filter cartridges?
Yes. Our service is available for pool and spa cartridge filters from all major manufacturers.
Why chemically soak filter cartridges?
Chemical soaking helps break down oils, sunscreen, organic contaminants and other material that may remain within the filter media after ordinary rinsing.
Can professional cleaning extend the life of my filter cartridges?
Proper maintenance can help extend cartridge service life by removing accumulated contamination and reducing unnecessary restriction. Cleaning cannot repair torn, cracked or physically deteriorated cartridges.
How do I know when my cartridges need cleaning?
Common signs include sustained filter pressure above the system's normal clean operating pressure, reduced circulation, heavy debris loading, or water that remains unclear despite properly balanced chemistry.
Should cartridges be cleaned after algae treatment?
Yes. After algae cleanup or other significant water-clarity treatments, the filter may contain a substantial amount of captured organic debris. Cleaning the cartridge elements helps remove that accumulated material.
Why are cleaned cartridges returned without a bag?
We intentionally return cleaned cartridges unpackaged and unbagged so moisture is not trapped around the filter media. This helps reduce conditions that can encourage mould or mildew during storage.
What happens if my cartridge is too damaged to clean?
We inspect cartridges for visible damage and deterioration. If replacement appears to be the better option, we can advise you before proceeding with cleaning.
